The two-headed eagle first appeared as a Russian state symbol in 1497 during the reign of Ivan III. It depicts a two-headed eagle with three crowns on its head, symbolizing the sovereignty of the Russian Federation and its regions. The eagle also holds a scepter and an orb which symbolizes state power and unified state. The chest of an eagle there is a horsemen slaying a serpent, a symbol of the continuous fight between good and evil to protect the motherland.
